Dealer or mobile auto locksmith?

When a key is lost, the dealer usually asks you to tow the car in, book an appointment and wait for the key to be ordered — typically $450–$1,200 plus towing. A mobile auto locksmith comes to the car, cuts and programs the key on-site, often the same day, and usually for about half the dealer's price.

Transponder key
A chip in the key head talks to the immobilizer. It must be cut and programmed, or the car won't start.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an auto locksmith do?
An auto locksmith opens locked cars, makes new car keys (including when all keys are lost), cuts and programs transponder keys, key fobs and push-to-start smart keys, and repairs ignition locks — usually at the car, without towing it.
Do I need to bring my car to you?
No. We are fully mobile. The technician comes to where the car is parked with key cutting machines and programming equipment.
Which cars do you work on?
All makes except Tesla, Lucid and Polestar — domestic, Asian and European cars, SUVs, trucks and vans. Tell us the year, make and model and we confirm what is available for your key.
Is an auto locksmith cheaper than the dealer?
Usually, yes. A dealer often needs the car towed in, an appointment and a key order, and typically charges $450–$1,200 for a smart key. A mobile locksmith is often about half the dealer's price, with no towing.
What information do I need before calling?
Your vehicle year, make and model, your location, and what happened. If you can, have the VIN and proof of ownership ready.
